Based in Colorado, Wit & West Perfumes is an indie artisan natural perfumery with a focus on 100% all-natural ingredients and unique scents that evolve as you wear them and don't smell like everything else. Caldera Flower gives my previous brand favorite, La Valse, competition as owner of my heart!
"It is an exceedingly transportive fragrance. Right out of the gate, it is fresh, bright, and zesty, but very soon thereafter comes the juiciest bubblegum note ever — and it's all-natural! At this stage, I get lots of ylang-ylang with a bit of ginger, and it is mouth-watering! The ginger does not overwhelm me; it's a "gentle ginger," not at all like the harsh, buzzing ginger note in some designer releases. A while later, I sense more of the gardenia and vanilla, and when it wafts around my head, it smells like a tropical flower garden — slightly heady, but not headache-inducing. The more I wear it, the more I like it and appreciate its photorealism and ability to transport me to Panama. Well done, Wit! The dry down is a "your-skin-but-better" sandalwood and ambrette. I personally feel the vanilla more in the heart, but I do so enjoy the brand's house vanilla tincture. And now I guess I'm a fan of their ylang-ginger-bubblegum accord! Sillage is moderate, within arm's reach; longevity is 5-6 hours, which is good for an all-natural perfume. Highly recommended if you're seeking something natural and/or new for spring and summer."
The Violetear - A stunning violet candy scent
"...A skilled interweaving of rose de mai absolute (rosa centifolia) and rose damascene provide a warm honeyed voluptuousness with superb lemon-citrus undertone and spicy green facets, the very breath of a fresh bouquet of roses. Mimosa adds powdery floral airiness to the fragrance, layering light honey-like floralcy with woody back-tones. The violet opulence of the reserve iris enfleurage rises in a rainbow of amethyst, mauves, periwinkle, and plum. This is a stunning violet candy scent with slightly earthy and musky undertones and a delicately soft talc texture..."
Brumaire Woods...is definitely my favorite from Wit & West.
"Brumaire Woods starts with a fist gripping a sampler from the herb garden, smelling of mint, thyme, hyssop, pennyroyal, and the garden soil mingling with it all. The trigeminal nerve is activated: feeling cool, bracing, and sharp.
A few minutes pass, and suggestions of neroli are evident, but what really blooms on my skin is a heaping mound of oakmoss that fixes the herbaceous bouquet for a good while, feeling reminiscent to the mossiest aromatics that were marketed to gents in the 70s and 80s. One comes to mind: R de Capucci, one of the most oakmossy heavy fragrances I've smelled. This one is up there, and the thyme paired with it is a brilliant decision. This is definitely my favorite from Wit and West."

Honeysuckle Halcyon - After a few generous spritzes, my arm is drenched in deliriously pretty, honeyed flower

After a few generous spritzes, my arm is drenched in deliriously pretty, honeyed flower that strikes me as an easygoing little sister to Parfums Delrae’s gorgeous Amoureuse: heady, syrupy and sensual. But baby girl is out for a good time and mixes in some peach juice and a scattering of mimosa blossoms. It is sweet, but not overly so, juicy and languid, and makes me want to twirl into the arms of someone mama warned me against..."
La Valse seems to be a rose fragrance to end all rose fragrances.
"Wit & West's La Valse opens with a sharp, spicy, yet sweet pepper that is balanced to perfection so as not to be overwhelming with too much of a bite. Then, gliding with delicate steps, it wisps and dips me into the roses: Rose Bourbon, with its warmth and vibrancy and rose absolute with its honied and heady with a touch of spice are brilliant flowing partners.
After the lovely and elegant rise of the pepper and rose, I then drift into the finale with the last movements of this perfume. Whitney’s artisanal vanilla tincture adds sweetness and its close embrace is supported by longevity, endurance which is intriguing in a natural perfume. La Valse deserves a deep, and graceful bow."

Natural isolates are single aroma molecules derived from botanicals through processes like distillation or enzymatic fermentation. In this Wit & West Field Notes blog post, we explore what natural isolates are, how they’re produced, why natural perfumers use them, and how they differ from essential oils and absolutes.
In terms of the process for making perfume, it is important to first start with my definition of what perfumery is. For me, perfumery is the language of scent, both an art and a science.
So, what exactly is enfleurage, and how is it used in perfumery? Enfleurage is a French word that comes from enfleurer, which means to saturate with the perfume of flowers. The enfleurage extraction method is done using odorless fat (e.g., coconut oil) to capture the fragrance of fresh flowers.
What is natural perfume? Natural perfume is derived from 100% natural botanical ingredients. These can include things like essential oils, CO2 extracts, absolutes & natural isolates.
It is January in Colorado, and today is dark, cold, and snowy. While the chilly weather often inspires productivity, it also sets the perfect scene for me to think about perfume, create it, and write about it. Today, I am reflecting on the changing seasons, our sense of smell, and how wearing perfume can enhance our mood while evoking nostalgic moments tied to the seasons in which they were worn.
The categorization or classification system for fragrances based on the style or type of fragrance is known in the fragrance industry as fragrance or olfactive families. These fragrance families are determined by the shared olfactory characteristics such as floral, amber, fresh, fougère, chypre, woody, and gourmand.
